Students in the Medical Office program will gain an understanding of medical terminology, medical law and ethics, and basic office skills to enable them to provide efficient, accurate and timely services to medical providers and will choose one of the following specializations.

Students who choose to specialize as a Medical Office Administrative Assistant will learn how to function in the business area of the medical office to include scheduling, answering phones, collections, marketing functions, insurance claims, inventory control, finances and office management.

Students who choose to specialize as a Medical Billing and Coding Specialist will learn how code diagnoses, procedures and medical supplies performed by, or identified by, a physician. In addition, students will learn how to process health insurance claims, examine coverage issues, billing and collection and mandated documentation. Completion of this program will prepare the student to take the National Certified Professional Coding examination through the American Academy of Professional Coders.

New laws and regulations require healthcare providers to store all patient health records electronically. Students who choose to specialize as an Electronic Health Record Specialist will become knowledgeable in information systems and infrastructure along with healthcare informatics including terminology, applications and security. They will learn how to abstract and manipulate health information data and understand their role as a Health Information Specialist.

  • Complete the DATC Admissions Application
  • Pay the $40.00 fee online or to the cashier in Student Services
  • Take the Admissions Assessment in the DATC Testing Center in Student Services
  • Attend a DATC orientation (held every Tuesday at 2:00 p.m.)
