Electrician Apprentice

Printer-friendly versionSend to friendPDF version

Electricians bring electricity into homes, businesses, and factories. They install and maintain the wiring, fuses, and other components through which electricity flows. Most Electricians learn their trade through apprenticeship programs. These programs combine paid on-the-job training with related classroom instruction. Because of the comprehensive training received, those who complete apprenticeship programs qualify to do both maintenance and construction work. The Electrician Apprentice program lasts four years, each year includes 180 hours of classroom instruction and 2,000 hours of on-the-job training. In the classroom, apprentices learn electrical theory, blueprint reading, mathematics, electrical code requirements, and safety and first aid practices.

An apprenticeship is a contract between an employee and an employer. To be an apprentice in Utah, you must be sponsored by an approved electrical contractor and hold an apprentice license from the State of Utah. Apply for an apprentice license at the Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing (DOPL) http://www.dopl.utah.gov/index.html
