The Medical Office program teaches students to provide accurate and timely services to medical providers. Students in the Medical Office program will learn medical terminology, medical law and ethics, and basic office skills before choosing a specialization, as highlighted below:

Medical Office Administrative Assistant

Students learn responsibility for the business area of the medical office by scheduling appointments, answering phones, handling collections, managing marketing functions, preparing insurance claims, overseeing inventory control, maintaining and managing an office, and administering finances.

Medical Billing and Coding Specialist

Students learn to process health insurance claims, examine coverage issues, learn billing/collection efforts and mandated documentation. Students will also learn to code diagnoses, procedures and medical supplies performed by, or identified by, a physician. These codes make it possible for health care providers to receive accurate and timely financial reimbursement from insurance companies and government programs. Coding also protects the patient from undue charges and assists in creating accurate medical records. Students who complete this program will be prepared to take the National Certified Professional Coding examination through the American Academy of Professional Coders.

Medical Transcriptionist

Students learn specialized software to create type-written, legal documents from a hand-written or voice recorded medical report. Students will learn to transcribe hospital records, such as admission histories and physicals, consultations, operative reports, discharge summaries, etc. These reports eventually become part of the patient’s permanent record.
